Skeptical? Scared? Claustrophobic? Allergies?
We totally get it! When we first heard about mouth taping, we were hesitant too. But after experiencing the incredible benefits firsthand, we can't help but share our journey with you. So, if you're ready to dive into the world of mouth taping but don’t know where to start, you've come to the right place.
Hi, we’re Phil and Brodie, the founders of Tapeher. Our mission is to help people transform their sleep and overall well-being through the power of mouth taping. Here’s how you can get started and make the most out of your mouth taping experience.
Step 1: Understand the Basics
If you’re on the fence about mouth taping, it’s important to understand the science behind it. Mouth taping encourages nasal breathing, which can significantly improve sleep quality. Breathing through the nose helps filter, humidify, and regulate the temperature of the air we inhale. It also produces nitric oxide, which is essential for lung function and oxygen circulation. On the other hand, mouth breathing can lead to dry mouth, snoring, and disrupted sleep.
OUR favourite benefit is that by nasal breathing it actually activates your parasympathetic nervous system and in turn induces a sense of calmness and relaxation which as parents is something we look forward to desperately. It also means you'll fall asleep faster and stay in a deeper state of sleep longer! Leading to the feeling of actually waking up feeling well rested, energized and happy!
By keeping your mouth gently taped shut, you train your body to breathe through the nose, leading to a range of benefits. Improved sleep quality, reduced snoring, and enhanced respiratory health are just the beginning.
Step 2: Choose the Right Tape
Not all mouth tapes are created equal! Brodie and I tested so many mouth tapes throughout our journey and found many common issues: they hurt the skin, caused irritation on sensitive skin, were difficult to peel off, weren't hypoallergenic, or covered the entire mouth, making it uncomfortable. That’s exactly why we set out on a mission to create the most comfortable mouth tape ever. Eventually, after testing 100’s of different shapes, sizes and materials Tapeher was created to address all of these concerns. Tapeher is hypoallergenic, gentle on the skin, easy to remove, and small enough to cover just your lips without overwhelming your face. It's perfect for beginners and those with sensitive skin.
Choosing the right tape is crucial for a comfortable and effective experience. You can purchase Tapeher directly from our website and start your journey to better sleep.
Step 3: Application and Removal
How to Use: Gently twist the tape, then pull apart to split the backing paper and peel each side. Place Tapeher over your closed mouth (you can go dry lips OR Brodies routine is to usually place Vaseline on her lips). It's important to note that your mouth isn't completely sealed shut—you can still kind of speak if necessary. The tape keeps your mouth closed just enough to encourage nasal breathing without feeling overly restrictive. If there is any discomfort, adjust the placement.
In the morning, gently pull your skin taut and peel Tapeher from one corner. To make removal easier, splash some water on your face before removing if you’d like and make sure to remove slowly. For those with sensitive skin, applying a thin layer of Vaseline on your lips before taping can help with easier removal and minimize any potential irritation.

Step 4: Relax and Sleep
Once the tape is in place, try to relax and focus on breathing through your nose. It might feel strange at first, but give it some time. Most people get used to it within a few days. Create a calming bedtime routine to help you wind down. This can include activities like reading a book, practicing gentle yoga, or meditating. The goal is to ease your body and mind into a state of relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Monitor your sleep quality using a sleep tracker (we use Whoop) to observe any changes and improvements over time. Remember, everyone’s body is different, and the time it takes to notice significant benefits can vary. Be patient and consistent with your practice.
Step 5: Prepare Yourself for Amazing Results!
Get ready to experience incredible changes! Pay attention to any subtle shifts, like waking up with a less dry mouth, feeling more refreshed, or noticing a decrease in snoring. These small yet powerful improvements are signs that the tape is working its magic.
To make the most of your mouth taping journey, track your sleep patterns and any other changes you observe. Keep a journal or use a sleep tracking app to record how you feel each morning and note any differences in your sleep quality. Over time, you'll see a pattern of gradual improvements, confirming that the tape is making a positive impact. Embrace the process and celebrate these incremental wins as they will keep you motivated and excited about your journey to better sleep!
Step 6: Keep It Going for Even More Changes!
Remember, it might take a little time to notice significant benefits, especially if you already breathe through your nose at night. Stick with it for a few weeks to truly experience the transformative effects. Short-term benefits like better sleep quality and reduced snoring can be noticed within days to weeks. Over several weeks to months, you might observe improvements in overall respiratory health and energy levels. Long-term benefits, including enhanced cardiovascular health and cognitive function, may take several months to years.
Conclusion
Mouth taping can be a game-changer for your sleep quality and overall health. By following these steps and giving yourself time to adjust, you’ll be well on your way to experiencing the amazing benefits that so many others have discovered. We’re here to support you every step of the way on your journey to better sleep.
